Abstract Background In the field of video game violence experienced serious reversals with repudiations of the current research by the US Supreme Court and the Australian Government as non-compelling and fundamentally flawed. Scholars too have been calling for higher quality research on this issue. The current study seeks to answer this call by providing longitudinal data on youth aggression and dating violence as potential consequences of violent video game exposure using well-validated clinical outcome measures and controlling for other relevant predictors of youth aggression. Method A sample of , mainly Hispanic youth, were tested at 3 intervals, an initial interview, and 1-year and 3-year intervals. Results Results indicated that exposure to video game violence was not related to any of the negative outcomes. Depression, antisocial personality traits, exposure to family violence and peer influences were the best predictors of aggression-related outcomes. Interpretation The current study supports a growing body of evidence pointing away from video game violence use as a predictor of youth aggression. Public policy efforts, including funding, would best be served by redirecting them toward other prevention programs for youth violence. Previous article in issue.

Matching algorithms , which the company believes matches people’s core traits and values to replicate the traits of happy couples, use these answers to match members with users the company believes will be compatible.
They will be able to see the matches who score at an advanced level of compatibility and also why. We don’t want to make enemies out of them. But at the same time, I take a real strong stand against same-sex marriage, anywhere that I can comment on it. Olson , an attorney for eHarmony, said that even though the company believed the complaint was “an unfair characterization of our business”, it chose to settle because of the unpredictable nature of litigation.
The company, which did not admit wrongdoing, agreed to allow access to both its gay and straight dating sites with a single subscription, to display its gay dating services more prominently and to establish a settlement fund to pay people who can show they were harmed by the company’s policies. According to Garcia, “Because of the price tag and the emphasis on long-term relationships Compatible Partners’ users are seen as quite desirable.
A member’s list of matches does not indicate which members are paying or non-paying, so users may not be able to communicate with all of their matches. The author hypothesizes that, since eHarmony’s questionnaire and high cost of membership deter people who are interested in casual dating, eHarmony’s members are more likely to be interested in a long-term relationship.
Pre-Marriage Awareness Questionnaire — Essential for seriously dating or engaged couples — When my daughter became engaged, I went online seeking a good marriage compatibility test for them to take. Many online tests reveal a score after asking only one partner about 15 questions. You might be tempted for quick and easy reassurance, but you may just end up with a false sense of security. Communicating with your partner, managing uncomfortable emotions like anger and jealousy, and treating others with respect are a few ways to keep relationships healthy and nonviolent.
James Lipton The program began as a televised craft seminar for students of the Actors Studio Drama School , originally a joint venture of the Actors Studio and New School University in , with Paul Newman , a former Actors Studio president as its first guest, and soon became Bravo’s flagship program. The show deliberately uses a slower pace in the interviews as compared with a typical celebrity interview, thus cameras usually record a couple of hours of conversation, later edited to one or two hours, a trick used by Groucho Marx on his s quiz show You Bet Your Life.
Lipton’s guest chair, actors cease being stars for a while and become artists and teachers. The interviews are guided by Lipton’s trademark index-card questions, which sometimes reveal his well-researched knowledge of guests’ lives, often startling some. This process eliminates those interested in casual dating and attracts those who are looking for serious relationships.
But the matches these algorithms offer may be no better than picking partners at random, a study finds. Researchers asked about heterosexual undergrads at Northwestern University to fill out questionnaires assessing their personalities and romantic preferences. They were quizzed about things like self-esteem, goals, values, loneliness, what they were looking for in a partner, and how assertive or patient or creative they want the partner to be — and how much those things apply to them, says Samantha Joel, a psychologist at the University of Utah and lead author on the study , which was published last week in Psychological Science.
The researchers then designed an algorithm to try to identify what personality traits or preferences led to the in-person attraction using part of the data from both the personality surveys and the speed dating. They also asked it to predict who in the group would be attracted to whom based solely on their questionnaire answers. The machine could figure out who the most desirable people in the bunch were based on certain characteristics like physical attractiveness, Joel says. But when it came to predicting which people would be a good fit for each other, the machine failed spectacularly.
I thought we would be able to predict at least some portion of the variance — like extroverts or liberals like each other. If the results suggest that attributes psychologists would think attract certain people are effectively useless when it comes to making matches, then what is actually going on when two people are drawn to one another?
That question has left Joel and other psychologists scratching their heads. I don’t think people even know themselves what it is about a specific person,” Edelstein says. College students plucked from the same campus are probably more similar to one another than those out in the wider dating world, and there isn’t much scientific evidence that similar people are more attracted to one another, Edelstein says.
Without a bigger range of personalities, Joel’s algorithm might not have come across that magic combination of traits and preferences that makes that special someone stand out to another person.
